I was listening to the This Glorious Mess podcast last month and came across the delightful Meg Mason (Listen Here). A journalist by trade but most commonly know for her Agony Aunt style pieces for the likes of Elle and InsideOut magazines. She's witty, intelligent, wonderfully ordinary and relatable. I devoured her second book You be Mother like a skinny cap on a Monday morning. It was all I was hoping it would be and so much more. A story told by differing perspectives on the many imperfections and rewards of family and what it all means. Not only did I laugh (a lot) and smile (like an idiot) but I also found myself crying like my husband had just left me a two in the morning. I could easily read this again and again, simply Brilliant!
I am also painstakingly making my way through Jane Austins The Pride & the Prejudice. I have always read fairly contemporary fiction and as I enjoy reading more and more I want to open myself up to 'the classics'. But boy is it a challenge! The actual reading is fine but more the psyche of the characters. As a feminist women I find this whole genre of will she marry the rich man or not quite tedious. I would like to disclose 1) I have never watched the movie, as movies are typically not my jam and 2) I am only a 1/4 of the way through so I have high hopes that the story turns dramatically to warrant the prestigious place P&P has in our modern society. Either way I have a couple more time honoured classics on my too read list.
If you have any suggestions of classics for modern feminists please get in touch via Email or the comments section below.
You can find Meg Masons You be Mother here and The Penguin Classics P&P here. If you would like to see more of what I have been reading you can find me on GoodReads here.
Adios!
